Recreational Sailing

Baltimore's Inner Harbor is ideal for day sailing. On most summer afternoons the city generates its own breeze on the harbor, which is protected from waves or rough seas. For a little more wind, you can explore beyond Ft. McHenry to the Key Bridge. All Downtown Sailing Center (DSC) members (except social members) can enjoy weekly recreational sails from late April through the end of October.

Wednesday Member Sail

This is the weekly evening member sail for members. Skippers and crews meet on the docks at 5:30 PM; are assigned to boats by DSC dock masters; and then set off sailing until dusk. The J/22s and Sonars fill first. Crew may then be assigned to a cruiser or two. Access 10 dinghies are also available for those who have attended an Access dinghy orientation.

Wednesday sails are a great way to enjoy a relaxing evening on the water. But relaxing doesn't mean lazy! You will rotate through the various positions to gain experience and build your skills. Everyone will get a chance at the tiller. If the skipper doesn't ask you to take the tiller, you should be asking the skipper!

Sunday Member Sail

This is the bi-weekly Sunday afternoon member sail for members. Skippers and crews meet on the docks at noon; are assigned to boats by DSC dockmasters; and then set off sailing — maybe even making a "fort run" if the wind is good. The J/22s and Sonars fill first. Crew may then be assigned to possibly a cruiser or two. Access 10 dinghies are also available for those who have attended an Access dinghy orientation.

Be on time for the Sunday sails as these are very popular sails!

Registration for Open Sails

Registration for open sails is not required, but is requested. If we know we have too many crew and too few skippers, we will try to recruit more skippers. Click on an open sail below to register as crew or as a skipper:

Friday Social

On one Friday each month from May through October, the DSC hosts a party with open sailing, food and drink. Members arrive on the docks around 5:30 and fill up the sailboats for a stress-busting cruise around the Inner Harbor, followed by a party under the pavilion. Friday socials are potlucks, with the DSC providing the main courses and soft-drinks, and members providing sides, salads and desserts. All members are invited to the Friday socials.

Registration for Friday Socials

Registration for socials is not required, but is requested. Knowing how many people are coming to the party will help us determine how much food we need. Click on a Friday social below to register as an attendee or as a volunteer:

Boat Reservations

Skipper members can reserve a boat through the DSC's online boat reservation system. Bring your friends and family for a wonderful sail in the Inner Harbor on a Sunday afternoon. Being a skipper gives you the freedom to sail whenever you want!

Weather Policy

DSC boats are not permitted to leave the docks if there is a threat of lightning or if wind speeds are expected to exceed 20 knots. Jibs should not be raised on J/22s or Sonars if wind speeds are in excess of 15 knots.
