CHARTERING
DSC cruising boats are available for charter by qualified skippers who join at the
Cruising Skipper Membership level.
In addition, there is a per-use fee for each charter that may be
paid either in cash or by redeeming Cruising Credits. Details of the fee structure and how
to earn and redeem Cruising Credits may be found HERE.
In addition to paying the appropriate chartering fees, each skipper must undergo a one time on-the-water
check-out by a designated Cruising Program instructor and be oriented on the specific boat to be chartered
by the boat's assigned Boat Captain. After passing the check-out by the instructor,
a skipper may gain endorsements to charter other DSC cruisers by undergoing a Boat Captain's
orientation for each additional boat to be chartered.
In order to be considered for a Cruising Skipper check-out, applicants should submit a copy of their
sailing resume to cruising@downtownsailing.org.
The Cruising Program Administration will consider the merits of each application individually, but
the following standards represent the typical minimum experience for consideration:
- Holder of an ASA Bareboat cruising or equivalent US Sailing cruising certificate, or
- Cruising boat owner / former cruising boat owner for at least two sailing seasons, or
- At least 50 hours of documented service underway aboard an auxiliary powered sailing vessel
in the capacity as 1st Mate or Skipper
and successfully passing
Finally, each skipper must read and sign the Skipper Statement of Responsibility and Liability.
