Lynn Handy, Executive Director - lynn@downtownsailing.org

Lynn signed on as Executive Director of the Downtown Sailing Center in the winter of 2013. Since then she has work tirelessly towards our mission to make sailing accessible to everyone through fundraising, program development and operational management.

Lynn Handy started as the Manager of the Downtown Sailing Center's Outreach and Accessible Sailing programs in May of 2011.  As outreach manager she organized countless volunteer-supported programs that have helped more than 1,000 Baltimore area youth and more than 500 Baltimore area sailors with disabilities experience the life enriching programs the Downtown Sailing Center offers.

Lynn’s sailing experience began in 1993 as a camper in the DSC Junior’s program.  She continued to sail throughout her summers and became a DSC instructor in high school. For two summers in college, Lynn was a first mate and then captain for Sail Caribbean. She navigated the waters of the BVI’s with teenagers with a focus on developing their sailing and leadership skills.

Before Lynn Handy was our Outreach Manager she was a high school U.S. History teacher for four years at Aberdeen High School. She engaged students of all levels from Special Education to A.P. college level students. In 2009 Lynn completed her Master’s degree in Education Leadership.

Stuart Proctor, Community Programs Director - stuart@downtownsailing.org

Stuart Proctor brings an abundance of passion and creativity to the Downtown Sailing Center (DSC). Stuart has been heavily involved with many aspects of life at the DSC, including fleet maintenance, coaching, and all areas of programming and education. Now into his sixth season at the DSC, Stuart is especially excited to continue the collaboration between programs, the most exciting of those being the STEM Summer Camp powered by US Sailing's REACH Program.

Stuart, a native of Edenton, North Carolina, learned to sail through a community summer rec. program. He began teaching the same summer program when he turned sixteen, and has remained involved with sailing education ever since. Stuart currently holds certifications as a US Sailing Windsurfing Instructor, Level 1 Instructor, Basic Keelboat Instructor, REACH Instructor Trainer, and US Powerboating Safe Powerboat Handling Instructor. He is also a certified First Aid and CPR Instructor through the American Red Cross.

Stuart is an Alumni of the St. Mary's College of Maryland Offshore Sailing Team and was President of the Windsurfing Club at St. Mary's. After graduating with a concentration in English in 2007, he moved down to North Carolina's Outer Banks to pursue his windsurfing passions before seeking new adventures here in Baltimore. He loves Baltimore's cultural diversity and considers himself lucky to work for such a great organization in such an amazing city.

John O'Riordan, Fleet and Member Programs Director - john@downtownsailing.org

John O joined the DSC in February 2017 after moving from Dallas, TX.  As the Fleet and Member Programs Director, John oversees maintenance of the DSC’s fleets of J/22’s, Sonars, and power boats, as well as coordinating volunteer efforts and member sailing activities.

John grew up learning to sail on lakes near his home in Fort Worth, TX.  He started racing on lakes and the Texas gulf coast in small dinghies (Optis at first, then Lasers and 420s throughout high school).  John spent summers throughout high school and college as a sailing instructor, teaching at his home program in Fort Worth, and later at programs in New York’s Long Island Sound and Marina del Rey, CA. He still actively races his Laser, in addition to crewing on J/24's and larger keelboats when the opportunity arises.

John attended Fordham University in New York City, graduating in 2012 with a B.S. in Mathematics.  While there, he competed with the Sailing Team for four years, as well as serving as Team Captain and helping the team on the path to hiring a full time coach and becoming one of the most competitive club teams in the country.  Since graduating, he has continued to work in the sailing industry, as a keelboat instructor at Offshore Sailing School and then as a sales and tech consultant at Mauri Pro Sailing in Dallas.
