Junior Spring Programs
(Offered on Spring Break holidays from local area school systems.)
This three day camp will be a great opportunity to learn science and math through a fun-filled sailing experience. Sailors will spend three days out on the water collecting data on the weather while learning the basics of sailing. Sailors will also learn sailing strategies that incorporate navigation, angles, and wind awareness.
Day One:
Sailors will learn how to collect data on wind direction, wind speed, cloud shapes, air temperature and water temperature. They will take their own measurements and analyze their findings. The will then learn how wind can be used to provide energy. As an example, sailors will learn how the sail shape harnesses wind energy to make the boat move. Then they will go into sailing instruction utilizing this new knowledge to sail up and down wind.
Day Two:
Sailors will collect the same data and analyze the differences between each day. Sailors will also learn the connections between wind, water and sailing. Those discussions will include the importance of wind awareness, tides and weather patterns. Sailors will look at a chart and learn how to plot a course while considering tides, currents and weather. They will then use wind awareness to plot a course throughout the harbor.
Day Three:
Sailors will collect their final data and prepare a chart showing the weather changes over the three days. The chart they develop will allow them to discover that the wind is a factor of weather and can be used to forecast future weather patterns. They will use their findings to predict weather for the afternoon as well as compare weather from previous years. Sailors will then design their own race using their new found wind awareness.
