Volunteer Registration: Johns Hopkins Ataxia Center Access-Ability Sailing (Private Event)

Registration

  • You will check in sailors, provide with a pfd, and escort them to the assigned area or boat.
  • You will be part of a team to rig/derig Access dinghies (up to 10 boats). You might also assist in helping sailors to enter/exit the boats.
  • You will assist a skipper in either providing instruction to participants (3-4), or to just go for a boat ride around the harbor! Some sailing experience is required (must be able to follow skipper instructions).
  • You will assist a skipper with providing instruction to sailors, and possibly even participate in a race or 2! Some sailing experience is required (must be able to follow skipper instructions).
  • You will take up to 3-4 people sailing and offer sailing instruction as an option. Or you might just take them for a boat ride!
  • You might be providing sailing instruction (including "tiller time") to participants (up to 3), and possibly even participating in a race or 2!
  • You will be driving the Safety boat: dropping marks and assisting sailors in Access dinghies on the water while they sail. You might also be providing on-the-water instruction to sailors as well as acting as race committee! (Prior training and experience are required to operate the safety boat.)
  • You will be assisting the Safety Boat operator with dropping marks and assisting sailors in Access dinghies on the water while they sail.   • Training on our manual Hoyer lift is required to fill this role.
  • You will sail with a participant on an access dinghy. Minimal experience required!

Thank you for volunteering for the DSC's Access-ability Saturday sailing sessions. They cannot be run without volunteer support and commitment, and we truly appreciate you!

We will be following the up-to-date CDC and JHU guidelines regarding COVID-19 precautions, which may include mandatory mask wearing.

The day will begin promptly at 9:00 AM to muster, set up, rig and splash the Hansa Access Dinghies, and rig keelboats. Sailing participants will arrive at 10:00AM and sail until approximately 12:00 PM. The event will finish by 1:00PM.

The DSC needs volunteers to fill the following positions:

  • Set up, check in and escort participant sailors to the docks
  • Rig (and de-rig) Hansa Access Dinghies
  • Sonar 23 and  Freedom 20 Skippers 
  • Sonar 23 and Freedom 20 crew
  • Safety boat operators/sailing coaches
  • Hoyer lift transfer assistance (training is required)
