Adaptive sailing Event Lead

The Adaptive Sailing Event Lead is responsible for the successful execution of DSC's adaptive sailing events, ensuring safe, inclusive, and well-coordinated experiences for sailors and volunteers.

Pay: $23 per hour, based on experience

Role Type:Seasonal, Part-time

Estimated Hours: ~10 hours/week (Fridays & Saturdays)

Start Date: Mid March - 2026

End Date: Events are weather dependent, but anticipated no later than October 3, 2026

Reports to: Director of Community Impact and Development

Additional Information: Must be available on September 26, 2026 for Ya Gotta Regatta. Additional hours may be availability based on interest and program needs.

Responsibilities

Event Operations

  • Lead Access-Ability sailing events every other Saturday and additional adaptive events as scheduled.
  • Review volunteer and participant lists on Fridays and prepare for Saturday events.
  • Arrive 30 minutes before volunteers to set up equipment and dock space.
  • Conduct pre-event volunteer muster, including safety briefing and role assignments.
  • Run the event dockside and on land, ensuring smooth flow throughout the morning.

Participant & Volunteer Support

  • Ensure the safety, dignity, and comfort of all participants.
  • Support volunteers with tasks including:
    • Greeting participants and caregivers
    • Escorting participants to boats
    • Boarding and disembarking sailors
    • Pushing off and catching boats at the dock
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for volunteers during the event.

Program Coordination

  • Provide post-event summaries and relevant feedback to the Seasonal Program Manager (or designated staff).
  • Support adaptive sailing components of special events, including Hansas and Sonars at Ya Gotta Regatta
  • Assist with Hansa Race Team practices, depending on interest and availability.

Qualifications

  • Strong interest in working with people of varying physical and cognitive abilities.
  • Commitment to following safety protocols and adaptive best practices.
  • Physically able to walk, stand for long periods, and carry equipment.
  • Patient, kind, organized, and comfortable multitasking.
  • Sailing experience not required; training provided as needed.
  • Physical Therapy and/or Occupational Therapy experience preferred.

Training Provided

  • DSC event protocols and safety standards
  • Adaptive boarding and transfer techniques
  • Rigging and de-rigging Hansas
  • Dock procedures (pushing off, catching boats)
  • Introductory sailing lesson (if needed)
